Sony Unveils the SmartWatch, Shipping With Xperia S Later This Year

This image has no alt text

Smart watches are all the rage these days, apparently, as yet another player has come to the table with one… sort of. Sony has introduced the SmartWatch and has announced that the device will ship with the Xperia S later this quarter for about 100.

Sony Ericsson – the joint partnership between Sony and Ericsson whose phone and mobile division will soon be swallowed by Sony – had the LiveView accessory and while it was a great idea they didn’t really execute the way I thought they would have.

Sony’s giving it another shot here, though. We’re looking at a 1.3 inch OLED (read: WIN!) screen which pairs to your phone via Bluetooth and will show you incoming calls, texts, emails and more.

It’s important for devices like these to be extensive so we’re happy to know that Sony will be making an SDK for developers and will support application downloads from the Android market. Head to their site for more information.

Sony Ericsson LT26i (Nozomi) Leaked Again Ahead of CES Unveiling – Now With Benchmarks [Update]

This image has no alt text

Just because Sony Ericsson will soon be dropping their surname doesn’t mean they don’t have a few more devices to launch before going out with a bang. The Sony Ericsson LT26i has possibly been their worst kept secret, making its rounds all over the internet in leaked images and press shots. Today, we have a few more leaked pics to add to that list — this time showing the device side-by-side with the Xperia Arc S and even Quadrant results for all you benchmarking junkies out there.

You better believe (Sony willing) we’ll be bringing you some intimate hands-on time with this sexy device come Monday as soon as the CES showroom floor opens. For even more images, hit up the ITPortal source link below. Anyone else hyped on this device?

Update: Sony Ericsson has just uploaded the latest teaser image to their Facebook page revealing a device to be unveiled at CES. Hard to tell but it doesn’t exactly look like the Nozomi (leaked above). Could Sony Ericsson have more than one superphone to show off next week? Most likely. Multiple carriers? Who knows. Guess we’ll be finding out soon enough…

Sony Ericsson Posts Vague Photos of Device(s) to be Announced at CES

This image has no alt text

Sony Ericsson’s teasing us again. As you know by now, they’ll have a pretty strong presence at this year’s CES and are preparing to announce some interesting new devices. We, of course, want nothing  more than to see the Sony Ericsson Nozomi or the Arc HD.

Sony Ericsson hasn’t given a clue as to how many devices they’ll be announced exactly but if history repeats itself it’ll certainly be more than one – maybe even more than two.

The photos above (grouped into one actual image), posted on Facebook today, may not all be the same devices for all we know. Or it could just be one device. And that’s the beauty of a teaser – give us a lot of nothing and make us suffer with anticipation. We’ll just have to subdue that anticipation until next week, I suppose. [Thanks Joseph!]

Sony Ericsson Announcing “Interesting News” Next Week

This image has no alt text

The people over at Sony Ericsson have taken to Twitter and Facebook to let folks know that they’re gearing up to make an interesting announcement next week at CES. We, of course, expect some device announcements, and while we’re not exactly sure what to expect overall we do expect to see the long-rumored Sony Ericsson Nozomi.

The device is said to be an HD followup to the Arc, bringing us a 720p HD 4.3 inch display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, a 12 megapixel camera, a choice of 16GB or 32GB of internal storage (no microSD card slot), 1080p output and HDMI-out.

It’s going to be quite the looker and the fact that it will be announced in the United States makes us believe one of our carriers will be getting it. Be sure to tune into Phandroid during CES week for all the latest! [Facebook, thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Sony Ericsson Gives Timeline for ICS Updates, Rollouts Start Late March 2012

This image has no alt text

Sony Ericsson earlier committed to bringing the Android 4.0 upgrade to all of their 2011 handsets and now they’re detailing which phones are getting it when. Rollouts start in late March or early April 2012 for the Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray.

Shortly after, from late March or early April 2012 the Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ will all get the update.

Of course, Sony Ericsson warns that not all kits of any of these phones (meaning carrier versions) may not get the upgrade within this timeframe, if at all. That’s nothing new to note but there’s your disclaimer either way. Head on to Sony Ericsson’s site for more details. [Sony Ericsson Blog]

Huawei to Unveil Their “Smartest, Fastest and Most High-Performing Smartphone Yet” February 26th

This image has no alt text

We just received a save the date notice from Huawei for February 26th, 2012. That date and the location, Barcelona, coincides with Mobile World Congress, of course, and there they will be on hand to showcase their “smartest, fastest and most high-performing smartphone yet.”

Their words, not ours. We’re not sure what Huawei is cooking up but we know they’ve been trying to create a better name for themselves with devices that can compete against heavy hitters such as Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony Ericsson and Motorola. They are aiming to break out of the ODM mold and primarily into one of the OEM variety, and we don’t blame them one bit for wanting to.

We’ll be live on the Mobile World Congress scene once that time comes (it’s still over two months away so just keep it in the back of your mind) and we’ll be sure to bring you coverage of everything that Huawei’s set to announce.

Sony Ericsson Releases Ice Cream Sandwich Alpha ROM for Experienced Users

This image has no alt text

In a rather unprecedented move, Sony Ericsson has released an alpha build of Android 40 for their Xperia line of smartphones. The build is installable on unlocked handsets and is intended for use by advanced developers and experienced users. While the ROM contains many of the new features found in Ice Cream Sandwich, it is not intended for everyday use. Many features remain absent, including the ability to place phone calls. Here is the full list:

  • Google Mobile Services (GMS) apps are not included (for example, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.).
  • Modem is turned off and SIM card will therefore not be recognised (this also means you can’t make any phone calls).
  • Bluetooth™ is turned off.
  • Wi-Fi® is turned off.
  • ANT+ is turned off.
  • FM-radio is turned off.
The build is intended to demonstrate ICS running on Xperia devices as well as provide developers with a bit of a jumping off point. It is also Sony Ericsson’s way of saying “we are working on an update, but it’s complicated” and “we are making a big effort to show our support of independent Android developers and the open source community.” You can find the downloadable ROM, instructions, and other details at the source link below.

After Buyout, Sony Ericsson Rebranding to Be Complete by Mid-2012

This image has no alt text

We can understand if things got a bit confusing after Sony bought out the Ericsson half of Sony Ericsson for  €1.05 billion. What was once a joint venture is now solely owned by Sony, and soon enough branding will change to reflect the move. Sony had several reasons for making the business move, including the growth of their own patent portfolio, but has expressed the desire to unify their smartphone lineup with the rest of their catalog of home and personal electronics. The rebranding should be complete by mid-2012, at which point it is safe to say only the Sony logo will be appearing on Xperia handsets, if the Xperia name sticks at all. We have no reason to believe Sony will move away from the name that has been associated with their Android smartphones for the past two years, but with such a broad rebranding effort it is hard to say which elements of Sony Ericsson will remain and which will get the boot.

Sony Ericsson Nozomi Leaked In Official Render – Now Running Ice Cream Sandwich

This image has no alt text

I wish we had a bigger image for ya guys but we make the best with what we’re given. And what we’ve got for you is the Sony Ericsson Nozomi (LT26i). This device was actually pictured awhile back and since then, but this is the first we’re seeing it in an official render. You can see in the (very) small image that a few of the official specs have been cropped out but if you look carefully, “Dual-core” can be made out. Also, since Nozomi is most likely an internal name for the device the official name could be Xperia Cloud but it’s hard to tell with 75% of the device’s name cropped out.

The Nozomi is rumored to be Sony Ericsson’s new dual-core offering featuring a 720p screen and in a new turn of events, seemingly running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Can’t wait to see how the boys over at SE sex-up the Timescape UI on ICS. No word yet on pricing or availability but I am definitely drooling over here.

Box.net Also Giving LG Owners 50GB of Free Storage

This image has no alt text

Box.net is bringing the same 50GB of free storage offered to owners of Sony Ericsson handset owners to those with LG-made Android smartphones. The details of the offer remain the same, with anyone downloading the Box.net app and signing up for and account via their LG phone receiving 50GB of storage. The offer is valid from November 30th until March 31st of 2012. To be eligible the device must run Android 2.1 or higher and sport a display with at least 320×480 resolution, the requirements for installing the app. Definitely a deal worth taking advantage of if you frequently need access to files on multiple devices.
