Amazon Kindle Fire Update Version 6.2 Now Available For Download

This image has no alt text

Amazon has made available the 6.2 update for the Kindle Fire today via their site. While no specific changelog was given, users who have already downloaded and applied the update have been reporting more responsive buttons and all around smoother UI. Oh yeah, and if you’re rooted, the update will in fact remove root from the device but getting it back is just as easy using the SuperOneClick method you used to root it the first time. Hit the Amazon download link here for full instructions on how to apply the update and let us know if you guys notice any other changes. Cheers.

Late Night Holidroid Contest: 30 Minutes, 3 Prizes!

This image has no alt text

Hey night owls: It’s another late night “Happy Holidroid” Contest and we’ve got three prizes up for grabs.

We’re going to start mixing it up a bit the rest of the week with entry methods and time of posting… so keep your eye on Phandroid during the day… and for Galaxy Nexus or Nexii or what have you. But for now, goodluck winning tonight!

If you haven’t been paying attention, we’re giving away a Kindle Fire every single day from now through December 25th, along with a ton of other great stuff, so make sure you check Phandroid every day for the chance to win! Check out the complete rules here.

Here’s what’s up for grabs in today’s contest:

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire could be this holiday’s hottest product: at only $199 it’s not only one of the most affordable Android tablets, it’s also one of the best. That’s a killer combination. With a beautiful UI, great battery life, carefully curated apps/games, and an amazing array of media options thanks to Amazon’s Digital Content Ecosystem… the Kindle Fire is a sure win. Good luck winning one in our contest, but at only $199 it’s probably worth buying one just in case!

Isotoner SmarTouch Gloves

Every single holiday season these SmarTouch smartphone gloves are consistently one of my favorite gift giving items. They eloquently solve one of the most fundamental problems a tech lover faces: using your device in cold weather. Wearing gloves usually prevents your touchscreen from working: take your phone out, take your glove off, use your phone, hand gets gold, shove phone in pocket, rush to get glove on. NO MORE! Isotoner’s SmarTouch gloves, designed in my colors and sizes for both men and women, has technology that passes the electrons your body gives off, through the gloves, onto the capacitive screen and allowing it to work. VOILA! Seriously. It works. Trust me. Try it… and you’ll love them forever.

Seidio $30 Voucher

With so much smartphone use comes battery drain. Thankfully, Seidio makes some awesome extended batteries that fit many smartphones, allowing you to get longer battery life with the same device. No more toting around a charger everywhere you go: just snag a Seidio and call it a day! Seidio also makes cases, holsters, and other great accessories for your smartphones. Check them all out here!

Everyone who comments on this post by 11:59pm Eastern time will be randomly entered to win. For complete rules/regulations, please visit  our original Happy Holidroid Contest post… Good luck!

CyanogenMod 7 Caught Running on Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet

Last I heard, CyanogenMod 9 with Android 4.0 was coming to the likes of the Nexus S and Galaxy S and now the Amazon Kindle Fire receives the CyanogenMod 7, in the early build version. Hackers have rooted the slate and already installed unsupported apps, plus they’ve accessed the bootloader, so the Kindle Fire is certainly no virgin to these processes.

XDA Developers forum member JackpotClavin has worked towards replacing the customized Android on the Kindle Fire with CyanogenMod 7. Not everything is working fine though, as the hacker himself claims. It appears that the touch input isn’t working right and it apparently believes that the display is facing a different direction. Well, at least the WiFi is OK… The pic you can see here was taken by the guy working on getting CyanogenMod 7 on the Kindle Fire.

I must mention that the Amazon tablet was rooted on 16th of this month and it’s been a lot of work to do since then. The source link below shows you the progress of bringing the ROM to the Kindle Fire, that unless you’re affectionate to the custom platform on the slate.

CyanogenMod 7 Makes its Way to the Amazon Kindle Fire

Now that the Amazon Kindle Fire has been rooted it’s time to start booting up some custom ROMs. Standard choice CyanogenMod has made its Amazon debut, as xda member JackpotClavin has the first shots of CM7 running on the new media slate. All is not cherry, though. While many features seem to be working properly (including WiFi), touchscreen input problems are slowing the roll of those working feverishly to get a working build out to the public. As The Verge notes, CM7 will provide a more full-fledged Android experience on the Kindle Fire but it will come at the cost of the total Amazon integration that the tablet flaunts as its biggest selling point.

Amazon Kindle Fire Priced at $124 in Some Walmart and Target Locations

For some stores the Black Friday is still here, so it’s no wonder we found the Amazon Kindle Fire priced at $123 at Walmart and Target locations. As if $199 wasn’t low enough… The new price tag applied over the holiday weekend and some stores even kept this offer on Monday.

Some people on the Slickdeals said that they found the same offer in Best Buy and Staples locations. It’s important to note that this reduced price hasn’t been advertised, so it’s kind of odd to find out about it from the web. Expect several retailers no to match this reduction, since not everyone will be adopting the same policy of pricing.

At this rate, Amazon might as well start offering the Kindle Fire for $100 at Christmas time, since they’re selling the tablet at a loss anyway and they’re more interesting in the promotion it does for their services and stores. Did you get an Amazon Kindle Fire on Black Friday or Cyber Monday? If so, tell us your story in the Comments section.
