CES 2012: ZTE and Acer Quad Core Tablets Hands on Detailed

The Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset is one of the special guests at CES 2012 and two of the tablets it powers at the Acer Iconia Tab A510 and ZTE T-98. Those were taken for a hands on ride courtesy of the folks of PCMag and their impressions can be found out from the following lines.

These devices were shown at the Nvidia booth at CES and the ZTE T-98 was the real surprise, since it comes with a 7 inch display and adopts a chromed plastic chassis. Its screen is a LCD unit with 1280 x 800 pixels of resolution and the Tegra 3 quad core processor puts that to good use. The images you see of this seven incher were caught by IntoMobile and you must knowt that this slate runs Android 4.0.1, it sports rounded edges and most likely it also has WiFi, Bluetooth, maybe even LTE, plus the usual 1GB of RAM and at least 16GB of storage.

Acer Iconia Tab A510 is a larger quad core tablet, with a 10.1 inch display supporting a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution and it’s thicker and heavier than other Tegra 3 models. It’s also made of cheap feeling plastic, has squared edges, HDMI output, a microSD and SIM card slots. There’s one thing to notice here: the Android Ice Cream Sandwich experience on the slate has been customized with the Acer Ring UI. This is a pretty original widget that shows you volume control, web bookmarks, frequently used feature and search in a transparent circle over the slate’s home screen.

Hands-on the Quad-Core, ICS Powered Iconia Tab A510, ZTE 7-Inch [CES]

This image has no alt text

At NVIDIA’s Press Conference yesterday, they announced two tablets running Android 4.0 with Quad-Core Tegra 3 Processors. We hit up the NVIDIA booth at CES hoping to get the full run down of specs and details, but quickly realized that we knew as much as anyone: for the most part, both devices were pre-production units with final specs still TBD.

The Acer Iconia Tab A510 was the further along of the two devices, looking nearly complete:

I really like the middle button Acer added which pops up a quick navigation menu, allowing for volume adjustment, access to bookmarks, and several other features which I’m thinking Acer will (or should) allow you to customize. Browser and Screen capture were the two it showed on the demo.

The ZTE 7-inch tablet was far from ready. In fact, there were still Asian characters mixed with the English alphabet when you pull up the keyboard for searches, texting, or any other input. All the specs were up in the air, but we did our best to decipher the possibilities.

It looks especially chunky, but will most likely thin out as it enters further development stages.

Android 4.0 is what’s supposed to take Android Tablets to the next level, so it’s nice to see 2012 coming out of the gate with manufacturers prepping their wares for the year ahead. Are the Iconia Tab A510 or ZTE 7-incher anything you’re interested in? We know you all love the Transformer Prime, but for what else are you eagerly awaiting (devices, specs, features, etc…) when it comes to Android Tablets in 2012?

Android’s Chinese Manufacturers Form Alliance To Defend From Apple and Microsoft Patent Lawsuits

This image has no alt text

Digitimes is reporting that Chinese OEM’s could be quietly banding together to fight off the ever looming threat of patent lawsuits from Android arch nemeses like Apple, Microsoft and Nokia. The Chinese coalition would be formed by ZTE, Lenovo, TCL, Coolpad and Konka who, it’s assumed, would pool their patent resources and share information on how to work around alleged patent infringements and keep from paying the dreaded “licensing fee.”

As the Chinese smartphone market grows — currently the largest in the world — OEM’s are sure to draw attention from Apple and Microsoft who spend much of their time attacking Android manufacturers.

ZTE V66 Passes Through FCC With Verizon 4G LTE – Possible Rebranded Tegra 3 ZTE T98?

This image has no alt text

Sprint will have the V55 and now it looks like ZTE will be bringing another version of their tablet to Big Red. The V66 has just made it past an FCC filing not revealing too much except for that all too familiar Verizon 4G LTE tramp stamp on its lower back. The ZTE V66 could have the same rumored specs of Sprint’s V55 giving it a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and running Android 3.2 Honeycomb on a 7-inch 1280×800 resolution screen.

Not too long ago, ZTE showed off the T98 at a tech exp in China and if the Verizon V66 and Sprint V55 are just a rebranding of that device — it’s possible we’re looking at a 7-inch, quad-core Tegra 3 tablet. We don’t see much of ZTE here in the states but it looks like all that’s about to change in 2012. We’ll keep you guys posted as we learn more.

ZTE to Make High-End Smartphone Push in the US

This image has no alt text

Though ZTE has only recently entered the US smartphone market, the company has a much longer history producing budget-level devices for other areas of the world. But now that a claim has been staked in American soil, ZTE America President Lixin Cheng has sights set on bigger and better things. With sales of ZTE devices up 157 percent year-over-year, Cheng sees the US as the manufacturer’s primary focus in the future. To further their cause ZTE is expected to produce a lineup of high-end smartphones that will compete head-to-head with the likes of Samsung, HTC, and Motorola.

The move is similar to that of Huawei, a smartphone manufacturer that once dealt exclusively in low-end and entry-level devices, mostly for emerging markets. Over the past year or two, Huawei has introduced their lineup to the US and moved on to higher caliber hardware. It is unlikely, however, that the likes of Huawei and ZTE will be challenging established brands for market supremacy any time soon. Their real strength lies in the ability to manufacturer hardware that combines desired features at a low cost.

ZTE hasn’t made any plans public, but it is assumed that Android will feature on at least one high-end device moving forward. The other likely option would be Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform.

T-Mobile Vivacity for Europe Hits Bluetooth SIG

This image has no alt text

We still don’t know a whole lot about the little fella you see above. It’s being dubbed the T-Mobile Vivacity and is said to be headed to the European sect of Deutsche Telekom’s popular mobile provider brand.

It’s a Gingerbread device made by ZTE and looks to be headed straight for the low-mid range market. And the fact that it was spotted at the Bluetooth SIG means it’ll have Bluetooth, of course. It’ll likely have a lot of other common smartphone components (otherwise it wouldn’t be a phone) but there are no concrete specs to be had yet. [Unwired View]

ZTE and Orange to Launch San Francisco II (ZTE Crescent)

This image has no alt text

Orange’s San Francisco (otherwise known as the ZTE Blade) will soon get a sequel. After sales surpassing 2 million units, the the Blade/San Francisco will give way to the ZTE Crescent . The handset will be known as the Orange San Francisco II when it launches on the namesake network, but little other info is available. From the only low-quality image we have of the device it seems we could again see a 3.5-inch screen. The only other distinguishing feature is the presence of three Android buttons. A Bluetooth SIG entry pegs the phone for a European release (duh) with a 3G radio on-board. When that release will happen, well, we just don’t know yet.
