Quad Core Transformer Pad 300 Tablet Shipping on April 22

The ASUS Transformer Pad 300 quad core slate has been confirmed as shipping in the US on April 22, according to the company’s statement on Friday. The tablet is seen as a laptop replacement with 4G LTE capabilities. It comes with a 10.1 inch display and runs Android 4.0 ICS.

An ASUS representative mentioned that the product will be launched on April 22, but it’s already up for preorder with a $399 price tag at retailer BJs. This version is the one with 32GB storage and 1GB RAM. The Eee branding is gone, a name that appeared a couple of years ago and it defined netbook series at first. The purpose of the Pad 300 is to promote the features of ASUS top notch tablets, but in a lighter package and a more affordable one. Transformer Pad 300 offers 10 hours of battery life, that can be extended to 15 hours with the aid of the keyboard dock’s battery.

I must also mention that this device supports a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and the connectivity options include WiFi, 3G and 4G LTE. There’s a 1.2MP camera on board at the front and an 8 megapixel back shooter, plus a micro HDMI  port and a microSD card slot. The Pad 300 was introduced at MWC 2012 in late February and it’s only now ready to debut.

CEO Larry Page Says Google Is Focused On Low-Priced Android Tablets – Confirms Nexus Tab?

This image has no alt text

Earlier today Google had their quarterly earnings call in which they reported better than expected revenue. The Big G managed to rake in a cool $10.65 billion, with a net income around $2.89 billion and a $50 billion cash pile for use in acquisitions.

But it wasn’t all dollars and cents. During the earnings call, CEO Larry page might have let the cat out of the bag, confirming suspicions that Google would be releasing a low-cost, affordable Android tab for the masses. Page said during the call:

“There has been a lot of success on some lower priced tablets that run Android. Maybe not the full Google version of Android, but we definitely have a belief that there is going to be a lot of success at the lower end of the market as well, with lower priced products that will be very significant. And it’s definitely an area we think is important and are quite focused on.”

Amazon has long been one of Google’s biggest rivals and since their successful, rock-bottom priced tablet hit the market, they stuck it to Google, using Android as a base, but removing everything “Google” about the OS. Well, Google has definitely been watching, and if there’s going to be a smash hit low-cost tablet, Google want’s to make sure it carries their branding.

Current rumors are pointing towards a July release for the Nexus tablet and judging by the comments on this site, Android fans have already set their money aside to make this their next/first Android tablet (myself included).

ASUS to Unveil Cloud Computing Developments at Computex Taipei

It looks like ASUS is getting ready to step up their media game on their smartphones, tablets and PCs as they have confirmed that a cloud computing-based announcement is due at this year’s Computex. The show, hosted in the company’s hometown of Taipei, Taiwan, will let us in on ASUS’ latest developments which is believed to be a media-streaming solution not unlike iCloud or Google Music with movies. It isn’t out of the question to think that other types of files and documents will be accessed from the cloud. We can’t assume much, but we’re not far from the show as it kicks off June 5th, 2012. Watch the video of the announcement above. [via Electronista]

ASUS Transformer Pad 300 Gets Retail Price of $379

Aside from the rumored Nexus tablet that ASUS is supposed to be producing, they also have the very interesting Transformer Prime TF700T, the highest end model in their lineup, plus the Pad 300 unit, with an interesting price tag of $379. That’s actually the starting price and in case you’re wondering what the deal with this device is, it has virtually all the hardware of the Transformer Prime.

However, there’s a slightly downgraded screen and thicker frame in the mix. You also get a starting version of 16GB in storage and you’ll pay $20 more for 32GB of internal memory. Internationally, the 32GB Transformer Pad 300 was also spotted on the French Tablette Store with a price tag of $499. The keyboard dock is also involved here, in case you’re wondering and should cost an extra $149. So, do you intend to buy a lower end Transformer Prime or have enough money saved for the 1920 x 1200 TF700T from ASUS?

Also, have you lost faith in the company when you heard about their GPS issues with the Prime that made them offer a GPS dongle to its owners? Or maybe you’ve gained back some faith in ASUS when you found out that they’ll be making the Nexus Tablet…

ASUS Eee Pad MeMo ME171 Launched in Taiwan, Unboxed and Benchmarked (Video)

There’s another ASUS Eee Pad model out there, the MeMo ME171, a device that was just launched in Taiwan and then unboxed and benchmarked. This slate relies on a Qualcomm 8260 1.2 GHz processor and also involves a Bluetooth handset with a transparent display. It appears that this device comes in two versions, or better said the MeMo family does, one with Qualcomm CPU and one with Tegra 3 (370T).

The Nvidia one is supposed to retail for $250, so it’s a very interesting product. The ME171 is much more expensive, at $585, but it appears that’s the price for Taiwan only, so it may not be kept all over the world. The specs include a 1.2 GHz dual core CPU in the case of the ME171 shown in the video below, plus 1 GB Of RAM and 16 GB of flash memory. There’s also a dual camera setup, with a 5MP sensor at the back and a 1.2 MP one upfront. The one at the back is capable of 1080p recording and ASUS says that the ME171 gives you 8.5 hours of video playback thanks to a 4400 mAh battery.

Right now the slate is running Android 3.2, but it will get Android 4.0 ICS soon enough. This MeMo unit is 11.6 mm thin and in the walkthrough video shown here we can also see some benchmarks, stuff like Vellamo, Quadrant, Sunspider, Antutu, Nenamark 1 and 2. Other stuff worth mentioning about this device are that it comes with 1 GB of RAM, GPS, a micro USB port, micro SD card slot, micro HDMI, SIM card slot and stereo speakers. This device has an integrated stylus and it’s able to access 3G networks using that SIM.

ASUS Eee Pad MeMo ME171 Available For Purchase – Gets Video Walkthrough And Benchmarked

This image has no alt text

Back during CES earlier this year, we were able to give you guys an early look at ASUS’s Eee Pad MeMo ME171. Kind of an odd tablet, we weren’t quite sure where the 7-inch tablet would fit into the market especially when a more powerful, cheaper, and equal sized ME370T was just around the corner. More recently we’ve learned that plans for the Tegra 3 packing ME370 may have been scrapped in favor of the Nexus tablet giving the ME171 another shot for ASUS to introduce an affordable 7-inch tab.

Well, it looks like ASUS has finally brought the MeMo ME171 to consumers in Taiwan and the fine folks over at NetbookNews were able to pick one up for the low price of $592 (really?) and gave the tablet a complete walkthrough. If you were curious to see some benchmarks and how the tab performed with the outdated, 1.2GHz dual-core S3 processor, you can check out their in depth preview below.

For a device that should have launched a year ago, it’s not too surprising the that the Memo didn’t exactly perform up to snuff. We’re not quite sure if ASUS will follow through with their plans to make the device available here in the states, but let’s hope if they do, they can switch out the aged S3 processor for one of Qualcomm’s fancy new S4′s. If not, I can’t see any reason why someone would pick this device over similar offerings from rival manufacturers.

ASUS Transformer TF300T Up For Pre-Order Online – $380 For 16GB Model With Tegra 3 Processor

This image has no alt text

If you’ve been holding out for an affordable mid-to-high-end Android 4.0 tablet, it looks like you wont have to wait much longer. The ASUS Transformer 300 series popped up today in a Google search result, showing up at online retailers on both sides of the pond. French online retailer Tablette Store currently has the tablet up for pre-order at €500, while US retailer J&R will soon have the tablet available at $380.

That’s not too shabby a price when you figure the Transformer Pad TF300T is a 10.1-inch tablet with 1280 x 800 display, 8MP shooter and comes with Nvidia’s beefy Tegra 3 processor. It will also be available in a variety of colors like white, blue and red and features compatibility with an optional $150 keyboard dock. We’ll let you know as soon as these devices are actually available for purchase (and if those prices stick). Anyone looking to make this their next Android tablet?

Metro UI Now Hits Galaxy Tab 10.1, ASUS Transformer via Customization

If you’re so in love with Metro UI that you feel the need to use it on an already launched tablet, you can use custom software to bring it to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and ASUS Transformer. I’m talking about a tweak for people in the know here, so be advised and stay away if you don’t know your power user functions.

What we’re dealing with here is a theme that allows you to make your Android tablet’s homescreen identical to the one on Windows 8 or Windows Phone 7. You will have to flash the software  using ClockworkMod Recovery, but that’s not that big of a deal if you’re used to modding and tweaking. The source link below has more info, if you’re curios. XDA senior member BroBot175 release an extensive theme that simulates the Metro experience, so he’s the one to thank.

The mod is in beta testing, so the usual bugs are present. The number of widgets is also pretty limited, but it’s growing, so you should keep the app till it’s finalized. Make sure you have a backup of your data before playing with these tweaks. The latest releases include Android 4.0 support, more wallpapers and new widget names, making them easier to find.
