Sprint Uploads Galaxy Nexus Overview Video – Imminent Release Is Imminent

This image has no alt text

Sprint has just uploaded a new overview video for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Just like almost every other device on their network, the video covers all the features of the device, giving the world a look at what they can expect once the device is available on their network. And there’s that. Just when is the Galaxy Nexus going to arrive on Sprint?

Well, current rumors are showing it could launch next Sunday April 22nd with posters advertising the device going up in stores a week before then. You want my opinion? Buy this device on day 1. Get there early. Let’s show Sprint and other carriers we prefer our Android phones flavored with pure vanilla (Google).

Sprint’s EVO 4G LTE Visits the FCC

Sprint’s latest flagship device has trotted on down to the FCC and has been approved by the regulatory body. Of course, an FCC approval doesn’t reveal much – we already know which radios will be inside, and they don’t really tell us anything we don’t already know. Well, we do have some rough figures of the box and it’s not everyday that we get that, but we get nothing but the position of the barcode and label. Anyway, if this sort of stuff excites you then be sure to turn your attention to its FCC listing.

If Anyone Believes This is the Nexus S 4G, I have an Oceanfront Home in Idaho to Sell You

Because this most certainly isn’t the Nexus S 4G. Nice one, Sprint. Oh, but you can keep that “free” price tag on there whenever you decide to launch the Galaxy Nexus. [Thanks Zachary!]

April 22 looking likely for Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus launch

Earlier this week we received word that promotional signage would begin going up for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus at Sprint starting early next week. A new leak points to a launch not long after. If the latest report pans out, April 22nd could be one big day for Sprint’s fledgling LTE network.

With the LG Viper 4G LTE already set to launch on that day, it appears the Galaxy Nexus could join it. Taking advantage of the new speeds is a different story altogether. Sprint has only powered up its new network in a handful of test markets and a wider rollout isn’t set to occur until June. This leaves at least a month’s gap between the availability of the Galaxy Nexus and Viper 4G and the launch of the network they are meant to run on. So is this a calculated risk or a setup for failure? Perhaps Sprint plans to surprise us with a few early LTE markets to coincide with the device launches.

Either way, it looks like April 22nd is the date to watch if you are hoping to get your hands on an LTE Galaxy Nexus that doesn’t reside on Verizon’s network.

Sprint now taking LG Viper 4G pre-orders, April 22 launch confirmed

The LG Viper 4G is now available for pre-order through Sprint for $99.99 when coupled with a new two-year service agreement. A quick scan of the handset’s order page reveals the phone’s expected release date. “We’ll do our best to get it to you before others get a glimpse on Sunday, April 22,” reads the description. Rumors pointed to the 22nd as the launch date, which should mark the general in-store availability of the Viper, but it sounds like Sprint will ship pre-orders as soon as they have stock available.

The Viper 4G will be Sprint’s first LTE device and will ship with Android 2.3. It features a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, and NFC capabilities with Google Wallet.

LG Viper 4G Coming April 22nd?

After announcing the LG Viper 4G, Sprint didn’t give anything but a presale date (tomorrow) to look forward to. We know the device will be $100, but don’t know when users can expect it. Engadget has released a leaked document that suggest it could be coming April 22nd, just 11 days from today.

Sunday is an unusual day for a device launch on Sprint, but they have shied away from using their favorite day, Friday, before. We can’t imagine Sprint will have users waiting too long after presales begin so we remain hopeful. As always, it’s just a rumor so don’t go biting heads off if it doesn’t amount to anything.

Is This A Clue That The Samsung Galaxy Note Is Coming Soon To Sprint?

This image has no alt text

Call it a simple marketing mishap or foreshadowing of things to come, but cruise by Sprint’s official website and you may notice a large, Note-like device in an ad highlighting Sprint’s parental controls app. Maybe we’re reading a little too much into this, but the device is obviously a Samsung handset with dimensions matching up perfectly with the 5.3-inch G-Note’s.

When it comes to carriers advertising services on their official website, more than often you wont find something like say a Sidekick being shown off instead a phone currently in their lineup. You can take this with a grain of salt, but our inside sources here at Phandroid have been whispering in our ears that a Galaxy Note is indeed heading to Sprint, with technical reps already receiving training on the device (around the same time as the Galaxy Nexus).

Any Sprint customers clamoring for a chance to pick up the Galaxy Note on Sprint?

Manually update your Nexus S 4G to Ice Cream Sandwich [How To]

Sprint’s Android 4.0.4 update for the Samsung Nexus S 4G should be making its way to handsets any day now, but for the impatient out there Ice Cream Sandwich can be yours now. Google has posted the update’s factory image to their code bank and uploaded the official update file to go along with it. The file has been tracked down and can be installed to the stock Nexus S 4G without root or other modifications. Here’s how:

  1. Download the update file
  2. Rename the file to ‘update.zip’ (make sure the file extension isn’t doubled [E.g. 'update.zip.zip'])
  3. Power down the handset
  4. Hold down the up position on the volume rocker while powering up the phone to enter the phone’s bootloader mode
  5. Use the volume rocker to navigate to ‘RECOVERY’ and select with the ‘power on/off/standby’ key to enter recovery mode
  6. Select ‘install update.zip’
  7. Wait for installation to complete and the phone to reboot then enjoy Ice Cream Sandwich

It’s worth nothing that updating via this method will afford you the same results as those that wait for the file to be pushed by Sprint. This is the official software release all users will receive. If you have any apprehensions it may be best to wait until Sprint officially launches the rollout of ICS.

Sprint Stores Begin Receiving Signage For Galaxy Nexus LTE To Be Displayed This Sunday, April 15th

You know when your store begins receiving signage with a cold, hard, street date listed on them, that things are looking pretty official. Take this Sprint store for example, who has begun receiving posters for the Galaxy Nexus LTE which, according to the bold print on the packaging, will be displayed in store windows this Sunday, April 15th. It has been rumored that the device could launch on April 22nd, and with posters going up a week before then, we’re inclined to believe that date more than ever. What’s interesting is the poster makes no mention of the device being LTE capable. Something I’m guessing Sprint wants to keep on the “DL” until it can roll it out in more markets.

You can shake the higher-end specs of the HTC EVO 4G LTE at the Galaxy Nexus all you want, but there’s no denying the appeal of having a device loaded with the latest and greatest version of stock, vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich (with the higher probability of timely updates). Of course, only a handful of you will actually be able to enjoy Sprint’s LTE at device launch. The first cities ready for a handset that can tap into the 1900Mhz frequency have been announced as Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City and San Antonio.

Any Sprint customers out there excited about this news? Will you be picking up the G-Nex this Sunday? Maybe the HTC EVO 4G LTE is a little more your style? Or maybe, just maybe… you’ll hold out a little longer for the rumored release of the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note?

Thanks, _Epic!

US Carriers Form Alliance To Stop The Sale Of Stolen/Lost Phones Once and For All

This image has no alt text

Used smartphone buyers, who prefer to save a little dough by purchasing previously owned smartphones off eBay and Craigslist, may soon find little risk involved. WSJ reported today that the 4 major wireless networks in the US are teaming up with the FCC to stop the sale of stolen/lost phones once and for all. Apparently, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile all have plans to create a common database that will deny both voice and data services to devices that come up flagged as stolen or lost.

At first, carriers will come up with their own databases and sometime within the next 18 months, those databases will be pooled into one centralized repository. Currently, only Sprint as Verizon blacklist stolen/lost devices, and only within their respective networks (I’ve also heard talk that T-Mobile has finally begun blacklisting IMEI’s ahead of this announcement). A stolen phone on Sprint, for instance, can still be brought to a MetroPCS store for activation. However this wont be the case for long with even smaller, regional carriers getting in on this new database. This should not only effectively end the sale of stolen/lost devices forever, but those would-be opportunists, looking to cash-in on a deal.

What do you guys think? Is this a great idea that could lead to less insurance claims and bystanders who actually return lost devices? Can you find some kind of negative impact this could have on consumers?
