HTC DROID Incredible’s Gingerbread Update Now Rolling Out to More People

This image has no alt text

Late last week, a smattering of reports from DROID Incredible users suggested an OTA update was rolling out, but it seems it was a slight test from Verizon and HTC as users had trouble pulling it down themselves. It looks like the rollout may be launching for the majority of you, though. See if you can’t pull it down from the cloud and let us know if you are able to. And if you are, be sure to head back here with your impressions and discuss the update with fellow owners in the DROID Incredible section at AndroidForums.com.

Droid Incredible Android 2.3 Update Reaching Some Handsets [Update: More Pics]

Just the other day HTC confirmed that the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Droid Incredible would be headed to handsets this month, and after a few leaks and an updated support page from Verizon, it appears the new version of Android has already started its rollout to Verizon customers. Android Forums member toddsts took a snapshot to record visual proof of the update for all non-believers. Whether this is a full-fledged rollout or part of a small test sample isn’t known yet, but Droid Incredible owners should be on the lookout for Gingerbread any day now.

HTC Says Gingerbread Coming to Droid Incredible and Thunderbolt in September

This image has no alt text

Via their Facebook page, HTC has announced that we can expect the Android 2.3 update for the Droid Incredible and Thunderbolt on Verizon to begin rolling out in September. The month kicks off tomorrow, but an exact date wasn’t given. We have seen leaks and heard whispers of both updates over the past months, but it looks like some more Gingerbread goodness will be dropping onto Big Red’s lineup within the next 30 days.

HTC Droid Incredible’s Official Gingerbread Update Leaked Online

This image has no alt text

The last time we heard of the Gingerbread update for the “Dinc” was in Verizon’s leaked documentation displaying a 4.06.605.2 OTA update was ready to roll out but for unknown reasons, found itself delayed. Well, it’s been a long time coming but the official build of the Gingerbread update (as documented in the Verizon leak) for the HTC Droid Incredible has been leaked online and courtesy of AndroidPolice.

Besides the typical Android 2.3 Gingerbread features, users can also look forward to:

  • MMS Messages send correctly
  • Successfully play audio files from a message
  • Send Vcard through SMS
  • Internet connections via Bluetooth now enabled
  • VZ Navigator now operates over Wi-Fi
  • Change songs in the Music widget by tapping the forward button
  • Camera functions successfully without inserting SD card

Installation Instructions:

  • Download this file (Mirror) (MD5: 096d841530dd2f223ef4a1b701c7d429)
  • Rename the file to PB31IMG.zip
  • Drop it on the root of the SD Card
  • Boot into the bootloader
  • Flash as usual

Keep in mind this is a full RUU so if you attempt to install this update, you will start completely from scratch erasing all apps and removing root (if you have it). Anyone going to make the jump and install this or will you continue waiting for Verizon to push it out OTA?

HTC DROID Incredible Update Reportedly Delayed

This image has no alt text

It all sounded so promising the other day – the DROID Incredible’s Gingerbread update PDF showed up on Verizon’s servers and it looked like we could be getting a release within a couple of weeks. Turns out you’ll need to bottle your excitement up a bit longer because the update has reportedly been delayed.

A bug or two may have popped up in the final QA process and those will need to be taken care of before they can issue the update to users. Considering we didn’t have a solid date to begin with, I can’t say this delay stings.

Whatever issues popped up might be able to be fixed in a couple of days and a timely release could still be in store, but that’s just wishful thinking. I suggest all of you just sit tight and keep busy with something until Verizon sorts this thing out. [Verizon via AndroidForums.com]

Original DROID Incredible’s Gingerbread Update Sure is Coming, According to this .PDF

Need ultimate evidence that the DROID Incredible definitely is getting Android 2.3 following rumors that it had been scrapped? The trusty users at AndroidForums.com have uncovered the .PDF file on Verizon’s servers detailing the update. When we see this, that usually means the update is right around the corner. Anything can happen, of course, but I’d venture to guess we won’t go too far into the week without hearing official word of rollout plans from Verizon. [Verizon via Androidforums.com]

Gingerbread Update Still On For The DROID Incredible?

This image has no alt text

It was only 2 days ago we posted a questionable email from a Canadian HTC rep that informing a customer that the HTC Droid Incredible (1) would not be receiving an Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Or rather, “was not currently on the list” of devices on schedule for an update. Well, fast forward to today where we just received a Phantip from one of our readers who received an email from a U.S. HTC rep informing him the Incredible is still slated to receive the 2.3 Gingerbread update and that there has been no official release from HTC cancelling this.

Hate to say, “we told you so,” but just like in our previous post — grain of salt, people. It’s never gospel until you hear it from an HTC or Verizon spokesperson. Any HTC Incredible users out there excited about this news? Keep in mind, the email from the HTC rep also said there was still no estimated release date but sometimes hope is all we need.

Thanks, Mike!

[Update] DROID Incredible Not Receiving Gingerbread After All?

This image has no alt text

Despite receiving several leaks of an Android 2.3 build, the original HTC Droid Incredible might not be receiving Android 2.3. This was revealed by a supposed email response from a customer service rep who was addressed by a member wondering when a final build was coming. Unfortunately, the rep allegedly had this to say:

Thank you for taking the time to contact HTC in regards to Operating System upgrades to your Droid Incredible, XXXX.

Our goal is to give every customer the best possible experience on every phone. Every HTC phone is a combination of a unique HTC hardware and software experience and a core operating system. We only update our phones if it will provide an overall improved user experience as we balance features, performance and usability. Because of this, we will only be updating certain phones to Gingerbread. At this time, the Droid Incredible is not on that list.

To be fair, HTC only said that every phone released in 2011 would receive Gingerbread 2.3. The DROID Incredible does not fit that criteria. There were reports of customer service representatives confirming Gingerbread earlier, but as with any reports of these kinds, take it all with a grain of salt. Customer service representatives are oft-mistaken, and it’s quite easy to fake an “email” from a rep.

We’re still leaning toward the belief that the DROID Incredible will get Gingerbread – it’s just as capable as phones like the HTC EVO 4G and the MyTouch 4G and they have all gotten the update. The only reason we think Verizon or HTC would have to deny the phone its update is because it didn’t do as well as other phones commercially and resources need to be diverted to bigger userbases, but that’s hardly an excuse at all. The fact remains that no official word from HTC nor Verizon has been given, so it’s still up in the air. [Droid-Life]

[Update]: There was a link in the original email (that didn’t translate into our source’s post) that linked to HTC Canada’s support page – we’re not so sure we should be trusting anything from a Canadian representative regarding US devices. Again, take it all with a grain of salt and await official word from Verizon or HTC spokespersons. [AndroidForums.com, Thanks Michael!]
