PSA:EVO 4G Maintenance Upgrade Rolling Out

This image has no alt text

Earlier this week it was reported that the HTC EVO 3D would be getting a maintenance update. It was scheduled to begin OTA on August 29th, but Sprint mentioned users should allow 1-2 weeks for it to get ti everyone. If you haven’t already, go ahead and check for it to see if you can pull it down. In case you missed the change log, here’s what’s going on:

  • Out of memory, Unable to send SMS error fixed
  • Images cut off in Picasa issue fixed
  • Group contacts not in alphabetical order issue resolved
  • Image size issue with contact transfer over bluetooth resolved
  • Integrated voice recognition accuracy with voice search and voice-to-text

And I know that third one was bugging a LOT of people. It’ll be version 4.53.651.1. It’s great to see Sprint still supporting the HTC EVO 4G after all this time and we hope the updates won’t slow down as we head into the latter portions of its second year.

HTC EVO 4G Receiving Maintenance Update

Just because the HTC EVO 3D has become Sprint’s new poster child for top-of-the-line Android doesn’t mean there is any lack of love for last year’s EVO 4G. A new update is slated to roll out over the next couple of weeks bringing a few minor enhancements and plenty of bug fixes to the world’s first 4G WiMAX handset. Here is what to expect in the update to software version 4.53.651.1:

  • Integrated voice recognition accuracy with voice search and voice-to-text
  • Image size issue with contact transfer over bluetooth
  • Images cut off in Picasa
  • Group contacts not in alphabetical order
  • Out of memory, Unable to send SMS
So, at least for now, the EVO 4G will not go gentle into that good night. No, it will rage, rage against the dying of the light. You can head over to the source link below for more info on the update.

HTC Evo 4G Was the Best Selling Android Phone in Q2

According to NPD Group, the best selling smartphones from April through June (Q2), all happened to be devices that launched last year and not this year. So, even though we saw some great devices like the Motorola Atrix, HTC Thunderbolt and LG G2X — none of these managed take the top spot from last year’s heavy hitters. Here’s the tops:

  1. Apple iPhone 4
  2. Apple 3GS
  3. HTC EVO 4G
  4. HTC Inspire 4G

While at first I struggled to wrap my head around this info, it’s now easy to see that the reason for the iPhone 4 taking #1 is because it the phone continues to be reintroduced over and over to consumers. First on Verizon, then later as a newer white version. Say what you will about Apple and their evil phone, Jobs definitely knows to squeeze every last drop out of his cash cow. The Apple 3GS saw a big price drop this year too making it appealing for those with AT&T who are on a budget.

What I found most interesting was the fact that even though Sprint is the 3rd largest carrier in the U.S., their HTC Evo 4G still managed to sell better than any other Android handset in the Q2. A simple explanation could be that because this was arguably the “best” phone in Sprint’s lineup up it left consumers with little choice for anything else until the Evo 3D’s release in July (Q3). When it comes to the HTC Inspire 4G, in my short time working with Best Buy Mobile, I saw Inspires fly off store shelves thanks in part to its higher-end specs but with an affordable $50 price sticker.

What did you guys think about these results? Were you expecting a different Android handset to come out on top? Are consumers catching on to the dual-core hype? Which Android device do you predict to take the top spot in Q3?

Looks like that huge campaign against HTC regarding unreleased kernel source worked – a lot of goods just popped up on their developer site today. We have the EVO 3D, HTC Sensation 4G, the HTC EVO 4G’s Gingerbread update and the DROID Incredible 2′s Gingerbread update. The HTC ChaCha and Salsa have also received some kernel source love. Head over to HTC’s site to dig in. Oh, and with the belief that we’re possibly just hours away from S-Off for the Sensation 4G and EVO 3D, this couldn’t be more perfect in terms of timing.
