Samsung Infuse 4G Receives Maintenance Update, Still No Gingerbread

This image has no alt text

Though owners of the Samsung Infuse 4G are itching for the promised Android 2.3 update for their AT&T handsets, a maintenance release has been pushed to the smartphone. The 14.5MB file provides bug fixes primarily, though it likely also comes to make the necessary preparations for the move from Froyo to Gingerbread. That is supposed to happen sometime this month, though the exact timing isn’t quite known.

Gingerbread is all over the place lately, it seems. US Cellular has delivered the upgrade to owners of the oft-forgotten HTC Merge Unfortunately it does appear you may need a Windows PC to apply this yourself as it requires HTC Sync, but be sure to call your local US Cellular location to see if they can do it for you in-store. If you are able to do it yourself, head over to their site to get started with the instructions and download. [via AP]

Motorola DROID 2 R2-D2 Gets Gingerbread

This image has no alt text

Considering the DROID 2 and DROID 2 Global have both gotten their Gingerbread updates, we weren’t surprised to see the DROID 2 R2-D2 wasn’t far behind – they’re practically the same phones. If you can’t wait to get your grubby little robot clamps on it, it looks like it’s rolling out now (at least the handful of emails in our inbox say as much). Go on and grab it how you usually do and let us know if it goes ok. [Thanks to everyone who set this in!]

Verizon Catalog Lists HTC Thunderbolt With Android 2.3 Gingerbread – OTA Update Coming Soon

This image has no alt text

Looks like Verizon is already listing the HTC Thunderbolt as coming equipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread in their upcoming fall catalog. The catalog should be arriving in stores any day now and with only a few more weeks left in September, we’re getting closer to that deadline HTC promised us about back in August. T-Bolt users shouldn’t have to wait much longer for their Gingerbread treats. Hang tight.

Verizon Posts Support Docs for Motorola Droid 3 Update

This image has no alt text

Earlier in the week the Motorola Feedback Network began contacting Motorola DROID 3 owners about an upcoming update for their handsets. Today, Verizon has posted the documents overviewing the update to their support site. The biggest benefit of the update is the inclusion of Google Talk with Video support, but numerous other bug fixes and enhancements come bundled in the 57.6MB file.

The update, which brings the Droid 3′s build number to 5.6.890, should begin reaching members of Motorola Feedback Network soak test this weekend. With history as any indication, all users should be seeing it by the end of next week.

Gingerbread Update for the Droid R2-D2 Coming Soon To A Galaxy Near You

This image has no alt text

We’ve seen Motorola release soak tests leading to the inevitable Android 2.3 OTA update being pushed to the regular Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global only a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, the Special Edition R2-D2 Droid 2 owners were left out of all the fun. If you thought Motorola forgot about R2-Droid2 owners, I have to admit — I was a little worried myself. Thankfully, we’ve come across this leaked PDF showing the software update version 4.5.602.A957 for the Motorola Droid R2-D2 will indeed be rolling out very soon. Doesn’t look like there will be a soak test for this one so I’d suggest hitting up your Settings > About Phone > System Updates every few hours (or at least everyday) to stay on top of things. May the force be with you…

[Update: Nevermind] Ice Cream Sandwich Coming to all 2011 Sony Ericsson Handsets

This image has no alt text

With Android’s next big update right around the corner, handset manufacturers are already starting to make plans regarding getting the new iteration of Google’s smartphone OS to their current generation of handset. Sony Ericsson has confirmed to SoMobile that their entire lineup of devices released in 2011 will receive an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google’s Eric Schmidt has confirmed an October/November launch window for the new Android build, but it is likely current smartphones won’t see an update until some months later. Sony Ericsson, once lambasted for their lack of timely software updates, has improved on the delivery of the latest Android features, but no timeframe was given as to when we might expect Ice Cream Sandwich to begin trickling down to handsets currently running Gingerbread and earlier.

[Update]: Looks like all of that was false. Sony Ericsson has mentioned to SlashGear that no such decision regarding updates has been made. Carry on, folks. [SlashGear]

Gingerbread Update in the Works for the Motorola Droid R2-D2?

This image has no alt text

As Gingerbread continues to roll out to the Motorola Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global, Motorola Feedback Network members have started to receive emails about a “confidential project for Droid R2-D2 owners.” While the email only asks for interested parties to sign up and makes no mention of any sort of update or soak test, putting the math together results in a suspicion that the Droid R2-D2 might be next in line to receive Android 2.3. The Droid R2-D2, as most will remember, was released as a limited edition run of Droid 2 handsets decked out to look like everyone’s favorite astromech droid. The handset marked the first official acknowledgement of the Droid handset lineup’s relation to the Star Wars franchise. Given the hardware, it isn’t a stretch to think the currently available update for other members of the Droid 2 family could soon be finding its way to a galaxy far, far away.

[Thanks, Joe!]

HTC DROID Incredible’s Gingerbread Update Now Rolling Out to More People

This image has no alt text

Late last week, a smattering of reports from DROID Incredible users suggested an OTA update was rolling out, but it seems it was a slight test from Verizon and HTC as users had trouble pulling it down themselves. It looks like the rollout may be launching for the majority of you, though. See if you can’t pull it down from the cloud and let us know if you are able to. And if you are, be sure to head back here with your impressions and discuss the update with fellow owners in the DROID Incredible section at AndroidForums.com.
