Quad Core Tablets Coming Before the End of 2011, According to Nvidia

Nvidia’s CEO recently talked about quad ore tablets, confirming the release of the first model till the year end. Jen-Hsun Huang is the CEO in case and he confirmed to Forbes this approaching release of Android tablets with quad core processor, available this year.

Last we heard, Tegra 3 had some problems and it wasn’t able to deliver 5 times the performance of Tegra 2 as promised. Nvidia is in a hurry to release the quad core mobile CPU ahead of the rivals of Qualcomm, who will only hit the market with such products in 2012. Tegra 3 will be seen on some very hot tablet models, such as the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer 2, rumored for October but most likely delayed.

Qualcomm and Nvidia have been competing in the mobile field for a while now, with the experience on the side of the first company and the popularity on the side of the latter. As far as quad core smartphones are concerned, Nvidia was quite reserved and didn’t seem to offer us a timeline for such launches. Thus, we’re left with hoping for such releases in early 2012 at best…

The question here is why do we need quad core processors to run a light OS such as Android? Maybe to keep that chaotic multitasking from Android 3.0 in check?

Nvidia CEO Confirms Quad-core Android Tablets Coming By The End Of The Year

In an interview with Forbes, NVIDIA’s CEO and president Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed rumors that Nvidia’s much hyped quad-core “Kal-El” Tegra 3 processor would indeed be running in tablets before the end of the year. Just like in the dual-core race, this will once again allow Nvidia to claim “firsties,” making them first on the market with a quad-core chipset. This should keep them ahead of rivals like Qualcomm who isn’t expected to deliver a similar quad-core processor until late this year or early next.

If you were one of those not swayed by current generation dual-core smartphones and waiting patiently for a quad-core this year, you may want to reconsider. Originally, Nvidia predicted they would have a quad-core phone in 2011 but Huang indicated there were only quad-core tablets in the works for this year. Sorry, guys. Who’s ready for a quad-core, Ice Cream Sandwich tablet!?

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang Has Faith in Android Tablets, Convinced They Will Surpass the iPad in 3 Years

Well, Jen-Hsun Huang, Nvidia CEO has a point when he says that it took Android two and a half years to surpass the iPhone OS, so the same thing could happen with Honeycomb. The official estimates that it will take 3 years for the tablet-oriented Android flavor to beat iOS and the associated iPad versions.

While speaking at the Reuters Technology Summit in New York, the Nvidia CEO also admitted that the first Android slates suffered from lack of marketing and technical issues. However, he has faith in future versions and he has all the reason since the majority of Android tablets used the Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU and the next units will probably rely on the quad core Tegra 3.

Huang’s opinion on Android is the same with the one of Michaell Dell, the CEO and founder of PC maker Dell who reminds us that Android matter very little 18 months ago and now it’s omnipresent. Will Nvidia continue pushing this OS or will it also grab a piece of the new Win 8 pie?

Android tablets to overtake iPad within 3 years

According to Nvidia boss
Android tablets to overtake iPad within 3 years. tablets, ipad, android, nvidia, Nvidia Kal-El, Video 0

There were reports doing the rounds at the end of last week that Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang wasn't happy with the Android tablet sales figures, with the CEO stating that the lack of take-up was down to a "sales problem", an "expertise at retail problem", a "marketing problem" and a "price point problem".

But that doesn't mean that Huang has lost hope with the platform. Far from it - he sees Android tablets beating the competition from Cupertino within 3 years.

"The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we're talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets," Huang told Reuters.

Huang pointed out that Android's growth could come down to the advance in chipsets, such as his company's next-gen mobile set up, the quad-core processor codenamed Kal-El.

The Nvidia boss said that there are already "at least 10" devices with "five major phone companies and we have five major PC (manufacturers)" in the pipeline for the platform, which was first revealed at MWC.

During the demo, Nvidia showed it off by running a prototype device boasting 1440p video playback running on a 2560x1600 panel.

Big numbers indeed, and the sort of wow factor that Android tablets will need going forward if it is to knock the iPad off of its perch.

NVIDIA CEO Convinced Tegra 2 Will Rock Android Slates; Rest of the Bunch Considered Worthless

NVIDIA’s head, Jen-Hsun Huang is pretty convinced his product, Tegra 2 will rock the Android tablet segment, also saying that current slates are worthless at this point. He criticizes both the iPad and Samsung Galaxy Tab, with the latter being dubbed a “large phone”. Huang said that the Galaxy Tab is a “tablet that uses a phone operating system on a large display”.

NVIDIA’s boss also said that the Tegra 2-powered Android slates have been delayed, while Google, NVIDIA and other partners perfect the new devices. Maybe this has something to do with the upcoming release of Gingerbread (Android 2.3), but Huang said nothing about that. The same man mentioned that slates will be disruptive to notebooks and entry level desktops specially because they can connect to a wireless keyboard and mouse, becoming genuine PCs.

Huang defines Tegra 2 as the future of slates, since it supports multitasking, better graphics, higher performance and needs less power to run than its rivals.
