CES 2012: Lenovo IdeaPad K2110 Intel Medfield Tablet Runs Android 4.0 – Here’s a Hands On

Intel and Lenovo are best buddies now and they showcased a prototype tablet made by the latter, all of that at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. We’re dealing here with a 10.1 inch model that you can look at in the following pic and know that this device is dubbed the IdeaPad K2110, the second device with low power Intel Atom family processor.

Lenovo IdeaPad K2110 measures 8.9mm in thickness, runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and packs dual cameras, a SIM slot, the usual micro HDMI, microSD and microUSB ports. NFC should also be available here, as well as the usual Bluetooth, WiFi and at least 16GB of storage. Sadly, people at CES were forbidden to touch this prototype, at least for now. Know that the supported resolution here is 1366 x 768 pixels and the CPU on board is a Medfield unit created with the 32 nm process.

The battery on this slate is rated for 10 hours of active use and 30 days of standby, according to people at the booth. Gaming and apps were demoed at CES on this device, showing that the Intel CPU has enough graphical power to take on Tegra 3 and maybe surpass it.  I can also spot a custom UI from Lenovo applied to the Android 4.0 experience.

OnLive Desktop for iPad pictures and hands-on

CES 2012: Flash and power on t'pad
OnLive Desktop for iPad pictures and hands-on

Available from 12 January via the iTunes App Store, OnLive Desktop is nothing short of a revolution for iPad owners who want a complete working solution for their tablet. It allows them to access and use Windows and Microsoft Office applications remotely, with touch enabled and utilising the power and speed of servers far more meaty than the tablet device could ever offer.

And the best news is that, although there is a pay model for those who require more storage or software, the basic, everyday version is totally free.

Essentially, OnLive Desktop works in a similar fashion to the company's own gaming platform. The client controls Windows and software hosted on OnLive's servers, while feeding low latency video back to the iPad. Instant response actions made on the device are fed via the Internet to OnLive and therefore you have complete control over the screen as if it were stored locally.

Word, Excel and PowerPoint are all included in the free version, as is 2GB of storage space, with all work done being added to the user's documents folder. Plus, everything is touch enabled, multi-touch even, thereby allowing you to manipulate documents, pictures and the like with sweeps of one or two fingers.

There's also an onscreen keyboard that can be brought up, plus a handwriting reader. Or you can hook the iPad up to a Bluetooth keyboard, essentially turning it into a fully working netbook-style machine.

The really exciting stuff comes, however, with the paid version of the app. For a subscription of $9.99 a month, an individual can access the other applications that make up the Office suite - such as OneNote and Publisher. In addition, this package includes a web browser that, because it is hooked up to a host server with superfast broadband, runs like the clappers.

During our hands-on demo of OnLive Desktop during CES in Las Vegas, we visited Speedtest.net for a quick check of the ping and up and download speeds. The ping was 4ms (in fact, a second try got that down to 3ms), while the download speed was over 445Mbps. Even more impressive was that its upload speed was over 300Mbps. When the app finally hits the UK, that'll be faster than anything else on offer beyond professional connections.

In addition, as the browser is hosted on a remote PC rather than the iPad itself, it is also fully Flash compliant. There will be nothing streamed or animated that you won't be able to browse on the tablet.

The subscription model also allows for multiple users to access the same Desktop; thousands of them, in fact. And those who pay will also get 50GB of storage space.

The paid version, OnLive Desktop Pro, isn't available quite yet though, with only the free app hitting iTunes initially. The company wants to assess the load on its servers and usage trends in order to offer the best service available before it starts to charge. It is also for this reason that the app won't be available outside the US for a while. And there's no definitive timescale for its expansion as yet.

Certainly, however, from our brief play, we genuinely believe that it could be a massive leap forward in cloud computing. And when it also reaches Android, iPhone, PC and Mac, as planned, we're pretty sure it'll make serious waves.

Nook Tablet pictures and hands-on

CES 2012: Fire rival up close
Nook Tablet pictures and hands-on. Tablets, Barnes and Noble, Barnes and Noble Nook Tablet, Nook, CES2012 0

Back in November,?Barnes and Noble announced the Nook Tablet featuring a Kindle Fire beating spec sheet so we thought we'd best take it for a quick spin when we spotted it on show at the CES expo in Las Vegas.

The Nook Tablet packs a TI OMAP4?1GHz dual-core?processor?and 1GB of RAM and it whizzed through the tasks and apps that we set it with ease. We even managed to watch a bit of vintage Stuart Miles MegaWhat action using the YouTube app.

One thing we did notice straight away is that the Nook Tablet is rather long for a 7-inch tab. Its dimensions of 205.7 x 127 x 12.2mm make it a fair bit bigger than the Fire in tablet terms and we have to say it feels a bit of a chubster in hand.

That said, it looks rather nice although we're not really sure what the plastic loop in the bottom left corner is for. Maybe you could hang it up as some sort of neo-contemporary art. Or perhaps not.

The IPS display features vivid view tech that its makers claim gives "unprecedented?viewing angles". We're not sure we'd go as far as "unprecedented" but it is pretty good; the resolution is 1024x600, which equates to 169ppi.

It also supports full 1080p?video playback (not at that?resolution, obviously) and features Netflix and Hulu support straight out of the box although the Wi-Fi?connectivity?was such that we didn't get to test these features.

We'll give it a proper run for its money some time soon but in the meantime we'll simply give it our nod of approval. It's out in the States now, costing $249.

CES 2012: MasterImage Reveals 3D Glasses-Free Display for Tablets and Smartphones

MasterImage 3D is a company that works on 3D display production and one of the big names present at CES 2012 in Las Vegas. The company usually creates stereoscopic tridimensional screens and some of their products are even intended for cinema use. What’s the deal with stereoscopic technology? Well, a different image is projected on each of the viewer’s eyes…

MasterImage creates auto-stereoscopic 3D screens ranging from 3 to 10 inches in diagonal and that’s exactly what they showcased at CES 2012 this year. They get their 3D effects through the cell matrix parallax barrier patented technology, that offers a viewing angle of 10 degrees and reduces any ghosting problem or Moire effect issues. The smartphone display the company exhibited measures 4.3 inches in diagonal and supports a 720p resolution.

The 3D tablet display is 10.1 inch in diagonal and supports a 1900 x 900 pixel res. MasterImage claims that the first devices with their technology on board will debut in the second half of 2012.

CES 2012: Windows 8 ARM Tablet Getting Shown in Las Vegas, Courtesy of TI

Texas Instruments will be showing off a Windows 8 ARM tablet at CES 2012 during this week’s show. The device will run the latest version of Windows and sport an OMAP4470 processor, but don’t expect any branding here, since this slate is a reference design probably. In case you’re in Las Vegas right now, feel free to visit the TI CES booth and you might find this device there.

The Windows 8 ARM version wasn’t shown at BUILD last year, so everyone is curious to have some fun with that reference design, I bet. The reference design that TI refused to show at BUILD had a dual core 1GHz OMAP4430 processor on board, but the newcomer will opt for a dual core 1.7GHz CPU instead. No idea when such devices will actually ship, but it’s safe to assume that this will happen after Windows 8 ARM edition is launched.

Some people have been talking about 2013, but the sooner the better, honestly, especially if the OS is truly a hit. What do you think about it?

Sony Vaio laptop concepts see a tablet future (pictures)

CES 2012: Spilt screen
Sony Vaio laptop concepts see a tablet future (pictures). Laptops, Sony, CES2012, Vaio, Tablets, Photos 0

Sony has revealed a possible future for its Vaio laptops at CES 2012 in Las Vegas, showing off two very different concept designs behind glass.

The first Vaio concept (above) It is a two part solution; a thin curvy looking screen and a thin curvy looking keyboard.

In the design mock-up on show, the screen is able to stand thanks to a bulbous panel at the rear, while in a second model in the same box the bulbous behind has disappeared.

They could be two separate options, or as we like to think, a design that expands and retracts when needed. That sounds far more fun.

If that doesn't sound like your cup of tea then maybe the second will. It is a?tablet style Vaio that slides back to reveal a keyboard and stylus beneath. If the design looks familar, it's because Asus revealed a tablet with a slide out keyboard called the Eee Pad Slider at CES 2011 pipping Sony to the post by a production unit that actually went on sale in 2011.?

The Asus model was based on being a tablet first and then a laptop second, however it appears from talking to Sony representatives on the company's stand at CES that the Vaio would take the laptop first, tablet second, approach.?That's likely to be a very strong possibility thanks to the upcoming launch of Windows 8 expected later in the year that plans to let Windows users enjoy a split personality from their OS.?

For those not fussed with typing on a keyboard, the laptop also comes with a stylus that slots in to the Vaio laptop in front of the large trackpad and can be used to make notes on the screen.

Sadly there is no word on whether this the two Sony Vaio future concepts will ever make it into production or even if they would ever go on sale in their current form.

Huawei Ascend P1/S Hands-On and Impressions [Video]

This image has no alt text

Note: The P1 is almost identical to the P1S except it’s a bit thicker at 7.69mm and has a weaker capacity battery at 1670mAh.

The folks at Huawei were on hand at CES 2012 in Las Vegas to introduce to us the ultra slim and beautiful Huawei P1 and P1s. They’re the latest in a line of devices that will help push Huawei into the premium OEM status that they’ve been aiming for.

For starters, you’re looking at none other than the world’s thinnest smartphone in the P1S. They’ve managed to get the device down to a slim 6.68mm slate form factor. It’s designed to provide maximum comfort both in your hand and in your pocket and its thinness also contributes to the device’s stunning style.

The interesting thing about Huawei’s design is that they didn’t need a grossly overstated hump to fit extra components into. There’s a minor one at the bottom but it’s almost forgettable, almost like the hump on the bottom of Galaxy S II phones.

Hauwei is using a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display with qHD resolution. That’s a bit of an oddity compared to other devices which use AMOLED displays as most tend to clock in below it or in some cases ( Galaxy Nexus) above it. It’s everything you’ve come to expect from this display by now. Bright, vivid, accurate and responsive. It’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

We have an 8 megapixel autofocus BSI sensor that shoots 1080p HD video and is accompanied by dual LED flashes. While I wasn’t able to test the camera in an optimal environment I could tell that it wasn’t a slouch of a camera.

I would need a bit more testing to determine its position up against the likes of Samsung or Sony but I can’t imagine they’d be far behind if what they say about using the highest quality components available is true. We also have your standard 1.3 megapixel front facing camera which can shoot 720p HD video.

The device has a 1.5Ghz dual-core TI OMPA 4460 processor. Although it’s long been known that this SoC was capable of speeds higher than 1.2GHz, many OEMs have been reluctant to push it further. Huawei is going against the norm, however, and it looks like it will pay off performance wise. It did handle Android 4.0 quite well though a rep was quick to tell us that it wasn’t even fully optimized yet.

Speaking of Android 4.0, Huawei hasn’t touched the user interface much but they did add a custom lockscreen which many will find more useful than annoying. It takes its cues from the circle-based lockscreen that’s found in stock Android 4.0 but adds two more buttons for unlocking to messaging and unlocking to your phone. It’s something I wish my Galaxy Nexus had so it goes to show that some customizations do tend to be helpful for some users.

Huawei’s focus was not only beauty, but quality as well. They mentioned that they’re using all of the best components available for everything from the display to the camera and from the speakers to the microphones. The device supports Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound + Dolby Mobile 3.0 and has noice cancellation microphones for clear call quality.

As for other specs, we have an MHL port which allows you to use an HDMI cable to output HD video. It’s becoming the norm in smartphones where things are all about compactness and simplicity while keeping a high degree of functionality these days.

1GB of RAM will help keep your apps running smooth and 4GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card port) will store your apps and other media.

Huawei’s touting superior battery performance though its actual battery (1800mAh li-ion) is nothing special. Software optimizations are said to be the difference here. Boldly enough, they illustrated its performance up against the Galaxy S II and pretty much said that it had nothing on the P1S.

Huawei is still trying hard to break out of that ODM model they’ve made money on for years and into the premium OEM class which enjoys the likes of HTC, Sony, Samsung and more. From the looks of things they could have a sure winner on their hands but I can’t say for sure how it can hold up without using it extensively.

If any device will help them break into that category it is sure to be the P1S. It will be important for them to aggressively attack the United States market and to bolster their image worldwide. Unfortunately we don’t yet have a solid launch date but expect it in Chinese markets by the end of March 2012 with very aggressive pricing.

Be sure to take a look at our hands-on video above and more images below (including a look at the interchangeable backplates that will be available).

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime HD announced, mystery of 7-inch model solved

CES 2012: New models
Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime HD announced, mystery of 7-inch model solved . Tablets, Asus, Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime HD, CES2012, Asus Eee Pad Transformer, 0

Asus?has announced a new high-definition of the Asus Transformer Prime on Monday at CES in Las Vegas.

The new model will sport the same specs as the current Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime?that is about to go on sale in the UK, however come with a 1080p HD screen for those looking for an even crisper picture than on the original model.

According to Asus the screen on the Transformer 700 Series will be a 10.1-inch WUXGA Full HD 1920x1200 resolution screen.

The model will still come with an 8 megapixel camera, the Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

However those holding out for a 7-inch Transformer Prime will be disappointed say Asus. There is currently no plans to produce one.

So what about all those rumours? Well it turns out Asus's server was hacked and a image of a different 7-inch tablet found. That model is actually called the MemMo 370T and is a 7-inch Android powered tablet.

Sadly there are no plans to bring it to the UK and it will not be coming with a transformer like keyboard dock or be able to plug into the 10.1-inch Transformer dock either.

In this case it really was wishful thinking.
