Sony Tablet S Has Begun Receiving Its Android 3.2 Update

This image has no alt text

The promised Android 3.2 update for the Sony Tablet S is officially read for download. It appears as if Sony is already setting a great Android track record for themselves by providing a timely update to the latest version of Honeycomb. Well, that and Sony needs their tablet owners to update to 3.2 if they want to take advantage of the upcoming Sony Entertainments services that should be arriving for Tablet S owners around mid-October. Sony’s Video Unlimited store will also go live sometime around Oct. 1oth. I’m curious — did anyone pick up one of these Sony tablets?

Sony Tablet S Disappoints in Benchmark Tests (Video)

Sony’s first tablets have been long in the waiting and now it’s finally time to have a closer look at them, first through a series of benchmark tests. Subjected to the tests, the Sony Tablet S was detailed as sporting fluid movement and great homescreen action, by the people who played with it.

We’re dealing with a PlayStation-certified Tegra 2 dual core 1GHz device, as usual for Honeycomb devices. There’s also a customized interface in the mix, providing great looks to the OS and moving on to the benchmarks, we find that the tablet tends to disappoint. With scores such as 1,556 and 1,734 in Quadrant, this device is mediocre at best.

Turns out that this is one of the lowest scores on a Honeycomb device ever, so bad news for Sony. Meanwhile, in the AnTuTu benchmark things are better, with an overall score of 4,711, better than the competition’s (other Honeycomb slates). As usual, keep in mind that benchmarks don’t reflect the real life performance of the tablet, so feast your eyes on this video, but don’t take everything for granted.

iPad 3 Not Coming too Soon, in Spite of Its Existence in Supply Chain

Word has it that Apple has a couple of third generation iPads available in the supply chain right now. However, the Cupertino giant isn’t in any hurry to release its product, so the iPad 3 will most likely come in 2012.

J.P. analyst Mark Moskovitz agrees with this move, also mentioning that other tablet makers have “stumbled” up until now, without making a big difference on this market. Motorola and RIM are mentioned as the biggest disappointments, while Sony is already predicted to fail, with the S1 and S2 slates.

The problem with Apple’s rivals is the lack of a refined, sleek feeling like the one of the iPad. Also, Android OS in the Honeycomb flavor is pulling back all these rival tablets, since we all know the problems of the OS, starting from lag, lack of dedicated apps and improper multitasking. However, Moskovitz is saying that Amazon’s tablet might have a shot to become a “true second place”, with the iPad keeping its domination.

Sony Walkman Z Gets Video Preview

This image has no alt text

We’ve finally got video of the Walkman Z that Sony announced earlier. We expected this thing to take cues from Sony Ericsson’s latest crop of Android phones but Sony has instead decided to go in a different direction and create the UI specifically for Walkman.

After watching the video, we’re glad they did. From this first glance, media management and playback seems robust and flexible and the UI is smooth for the most part. We’re not sure if this device will give us the genuine Android experience (homescreens with widgets) but at least Android market will be in tow. Take a look above, courtesy of DigInfo.

The Home Shopping Network is now taking orders for the Sony Tablet S. It was revealed a couple weeks back that we could expect the Tablet S sometime in September. There are no reports of other outlets selling Sony’s first Android slate, but Sony has been offering a pre-order on the device for $499. HSN, on the other hand, is selling the Tablet S for $599. It’s just four easy payments of $150, the price to pay for being among the first to take the brand new tablet into your hands.

Sony Ericsson Live Walkman Gets Torn Down In FCC Filing

Sony Ericsson’s Live Walkman was torn apart down at the FCC today. The musically geared Android device will be released in select markets and hopes to revive Sony’s aging Walkman brand. Not much too many surprises here — just a stripped down, bare naked phone for you to drool over (if you’re into that sorta thing). Hey, I wont judge.

The Live Walkman will feature Sony’s Qriocity music service and is mroe geared towards music aficionados. The SELW will also come with a 3.2 inch HVGA display, a 1GHz processor, a 5 megapixel camera with flash and HD video recording, a front-facing camera and more.

Sony Tablet S priced and dated by Dixons

The new Sony?Honeycomb tablet has gone on pre-order with Dixons.co.uk in the UK, ahead of any other retailer in the UK.

In what’s a rather strange offer, those desperate to order the new Sony Tablet S?tablet ?will be able to do so exclusively at Dixons for the next 2 weeks.

"Sony’s Tablet S is a real contender in the tablet market and one we expect to be a big success. The two week pre-order period for the Sony Tablet S will be a very exciting period for us to see how popular this tablet will be with our customers," said Mark Slater, category director at Dixons Retail.

While that might sound like a chance to get your hands on the new Honeycomb tablet before anyone else, don’t be fooled, it just means you can order it before anyone else. The Tablet S will still ship on the same day from other retailers.

The Sony S1 tablet, now called the Tablet S, will go on sale on the 23 September for ?399.99 for the 16GB Wi-Fi version, ?499.99 for the 16GB 3G and Wi-Fi model, or ?499.99 for the 32GB Wi-Fi only model.

Dixons told Pocket-lint that it is still looking at whether or not to stock the other Honeycomb Android tablet from Sony, the Tablet P.

The Sony Tablet S will be available in the UK exclusively from Sony Centres, Currys & PC World, and John Lewis.

Sony Tablet P hands-on

IFA 2011: Is this clamshell tab bonkers?
Sony Tablet P hands-on

While the Tablet S sports a "folded magazine" design, the clamshell design of the Tablet P is likely to be more controversial. The fact that the Tablet P comes equipped with 3G as standard and not an option is a clear indicator of exactly where Sony sees the Tablet P positioned.

Demonstrating the portability of the tablet, our Sony agent folded the Tablet P shut and slipped it into his inside jacket pocket. At 380g, it’s light enough to do this, meaning you can take your Honeycomb tablet experience with you on the move.

Sure, with the latest run of 7-inch tablets, like the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x we recently reviewed, we can see that some might want to take their Honeycomb experience with them on the move - a few more screen inches than your phone makes a big difference to watching movies on the move.

But with the Tablet P you get a 5.5-inch screen, which isn’t that much bigger than your phone, but offers a sharp 1024 x 480 resolution, and then you get the same again.

Of course it isn’t simple. As a clamshell design you have two screens and depending on what app you choose to use, they’ll either work together or separately so there is some method in Sony’s madness here.

Fold the Tablet P flat and you get 1024 x 960 pixels at your disposal. In the browser this means you suddenly have a lot more space to view your website, accepting that there will be a black bar across the middle of the page. Although this is quirky, the browser experience is actually pretty good.

Fire up Sony's Reader app and you’ll get portrait reading across both screens. You then swipe the pages and both screens clear out giving you the next page(s).?

The Sony Tablet P is, naturally, PlayStation Certified so you’ll find Crash Bandicoot pre-installed if that’s what you want to play. In many ways, the Tablet P makes more sense as a gaming device than the Tablet S, as you get the controls on the bottom screen and the game in the top - but if you’re interested in gaming, why not shoot for a PlayStation Vita instead?

Of course the counter argument to the convenience of separating things onto two screens is that you do miss out on that big screen wow factor. While Sony may be taking advantage of the dual screens with their own apps, we’re not sure that all third-party apps will put it to best effect - something we’ll have to look at in more detail when we get the Tablet P in for a full review.

As with all Sony products the Tablet P is well put together, but we’re not sure about the hinge design which seems a little crude although solid enough. Connectivity is still a little on the light side only offering a Micro-USB connection and whilst you get the DLNA connected features to shoot movies onto your TV, you don’t get the IR remote control functions.

Internally you get the defacto Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset to power the whole thing and internal memory sits at 4GB, although you can expand this up to 32GB via microSD card.

Sporting Android 3.2 at launch, we’re not totally sold on the concept of the Sony Tablet P, but if it has piqued your interest?it is expected to land in November and can be yours for around ?479.
