iOS 5 Hints at iPad 3, With 3G World Connectivity

A new iOS is a perfect way to discover hints regarding the future generation of iPad and iPhone. For now, we only have a bit of info about the iPad 3, dug out of iOS 5 by the guys familiar with such matters. The developer build made available this week has hints regarding a possible world 3G version of the third gen iPad.

TUAW sources found references to a mystery iPad 3.1 and iPad 3.2 in the USB device files of the iOS 5 developer build. Meanwhile, the iOS 4.3 only referred to three versions of the second iPad: iPad 2,1, iPad 2,2, iPad 2,3. Each of these models became a version of the iPad 2: the WiFi, GSM and CDMA one, respectively.

We must mention that such a reference is not always a sign that the devices will really exist, as these may as well be prototypes that will never see the light of day. Apparently, Apple is already certifying components for the iPad 3, according to recent leaks and we’ve heard about a Retina Display being included on this new tablet.

iOS 5 Brings Split Keyboard to the iPad, Ideal for Thumb Typing

If you’ve got short fingers, this is good news for you: the iPad will get a split keyboard, ideal for thumb typing. Implemented through iOS 5 (previewed yesterday during WWDC 2011), the input system is also known as “Grab Handles”.

This is of great use to the people who need to type using their thumbs when holding their Apple tablet with two hands. If you’ve even held an iPad with two hands, you know how hard it is to reach with your thumbs the middle of the keyboard. With the Grab handles you’ll now have an easier time with using the iPad when standing or sitting somewhere.

Similar keyboards existed on ultramobile PCs years ago and Windows 8 also seems to have such an input method available.

‘WWDC 2011: iCloud, Twitter Integration, Lion OS and More…

In a couple of hours we’ll partake (virtually) in the unveiling of the next generation of Apple goodies. Sadly, these are only software goodies, unless Steve Jobs wants to shake our weak hearts and unveil a new iPhone today. What we’re sure that we’re going to see day is a combo between Mac OS X Lion, iOS 5 and iCloud. The question is: what else is new?

Rumors say that Apple has been getting licenses for its music streaming service, that might be part of iCloud. John Gruber is claiming that this service could be more than just a MobileMe replacement and become a brand new iTunes actually. Supposedly Apple might also come out with a new Time Capsule, that will back up your Mac data and sync it with the iCloud.

The rumors go on, mentioning Twitter integration in iOS 5, a new system of notifications for this OS and moving on to the desktop, Lion OS is supposed to debut on June 14 via the Mac App Store. Of course, these are all rumors, so don’t take anything for granted. Speech recognition and new widgets end the list of a very likely plethora of new functions to see in the fresh iOS… More on that later on!

iOS 5 Preview is Magic… It Really Is (Video)

Magician and performance artist Simon Pierro is taking us through a magical tour of the iOS 5, the platform that Apple is going to preview tomorrow at WWDC 2011. Well, of course this is mere fun, but still the tricks in the video are nice and we can guarantee Apple is not going to show anything like that tomorrow.

However, it’s cool to see that you can bring things from the screen into the real world, learn to play tennis with the iPad and iOS 5, plus change weather and transport objects through space and time with the aid of FaceTime. All you need now is a particle accelerator to power your iPad and a bunch of programming aliens to write the software.

This is a whole new level of cool and I doubt we’d be seeing any of these features on a real iPad in our lifetimes. However, Apple does seem like the kind of company to sell us magic items…
