EXCLUSIVE: UK's first look at the Windows (and Android) touting tablet
Windows tablets by Christmas said Ballmer, and he wasn't lying.
Pocket-lint has exclusively got its hands on the Tega v2 - we're told by its makers that we are the only UK media outlet to have one on launch day.
First impressions, it's quite a solid build and is surprisingly heavy given its ultra-slim frame. It measures in at just 14mm, but weighs 870g.
However, it is packing some pretty serious kit for a small device, so some extra weight is to be expected.
Inside it's got an Intel Atom N455 1.66GHz processor, with 2GB of DDR3 RAM and Intel Generation 3.5 integrated GMA 3150 graphics. Storage is the SSD variety and comes in 16, 32 or 64GB variants (we've got the 32GB one).
It's got a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as standard and optional 3G, Wimax and Wibro.
Port-wise, you're looking at an SD card reader, two USBs and a VGA. There's also room for a SIM if you want to go down the 3G route.
The Tega v2 comes with either a 0.3 or 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and also has a built-in microphone.
As well as running Windows 7 Professional, the Tega v2 also offers you a gateway to Android. It's version 1.6 at the moment, but there are plans to upgrade to 2.1 or 2.2. The Android option is totally up to you as well, it won't come pre-loaded, but you can choose to install it from Tegatech's website.
One feature that we've already noticed that is pretty cool is the Home Button. In Windows mode this button has been embedded with the Windows+D desktop shortcut, so that each time it is pressed all open applications are minimised, and desktop is seen. When pressed again all opened applications resume their previous position.
The Tega v2 isn't yet available directly in the UK - your best bet for getting one at this stage is from Tegatech's European website. It'll cost you $649 and for that you'll get the device, a stand, some screen cleaner, a VGA dongle, a screen protector and a capacitive touch pen.
We'll be putting the Tega v2 through its paces over the next couple of weeks, before bringing you our comprehensive review. iPad killer? You'll have to wait and see.
