TabCo Tablet Could in Fact be a Windows 8 Model? “Cubes” UI Mentioned

The TabCo tablet and its many virals have many times been associated to Nokia and a possible MeeGo slate. Well, now another theory appears, as we have extra details about the device. TabCo is claiming that it had tablets before that “have failed”.

They could be talking about Nokia’s Maemo Internet tablet or maybe about Microsoft’s Courier… I’m starting to think more and more that this is Windows 8 and Microsoft, since this model will be lighter than 1.33 pounds, it will lack front buttons, it will come with preloaded document apps (sounds like Microsoft) and feature a USB port.

Also, there’s a cell model on board, Angry Birds preloaded and elements specific to a rubiks cube in the UI, maybe meaning square tiles. Considering that Windows 8 is supposed to come in 2012, while the WeTab Tabco is coming next month, the Microsoft option is out of the question. What other square-based UIs to you know?

Windows 8 Tablet Concept On Display, Courtesy of Microsoft

It was a big day yesterday for Microsoft fans, who got to see an interesting Windows 8 tablet concept, that’s also pictured below. The next-gen device was shown during a Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference presentation.

This mystery slate show an UI similar to the one of WP7, a detail that has been stated a number of times till now. Windows Phone boss Andy Less recently claimed that tablets will never get WP7, although we’ve seen some ports recently. The purpose of Win 8 and the tablet that it will run on is doing everything a PC can do.

However, Microsoft built Win 8 not only for tablets, but also for desktops, so everyone will be pleased. With recent rumors of Xbox 360 games support in the next Windows, things can’t get any better than this. Now, I’m curious what company will take on the production of the mystery tablet. Maybe HP… what about Dell or maybe a surprise like ASUS, Acer or HTC?

HP Thinking About Windows 8 Slates After TouchPad Failure

HP’s TouchPad slate took off in the States yesterday and already bad reviews are pouring in. Thus, it’s no wonder that the PC maker intends to switch to Windows 8 tablets in the future, also making use of its good relationship with Microsoft.

HP purchased Palm last year for $1.2 billion, but this deal has yet to pay off, although webOS is an excellent platform. In a recent interview with Fast Company, HP’s president and CTO Phil McKinney talked about future Windows 8 tablets.  McKinney said that he can’t reveal more info, but we expect something good to be cooking.

Considering that HP was already a big partner for the delivery of Windows 7 on various devices, it’s only logical that the next OS will get the same love, with the low adoption rate of webOS. It will be strange for the average customer to see HP offering both Windows 8 and webOS tablets, but we’ll just have to wait and see how they figure this one out.

Windows 8 Adopted by Next ASUS Eee Pad Transformer? Could be!

With the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer being the hit that it is, it was only a matter a time till a follow-up entered our radars. Now, we learn from Notebook Italia, that ASUS has set its eyes on Windows 8 as the platform of choice for the next Eee Pad Transformer model.

This new model will come in 2012, accompanied by a follow-up to the Android version that took off in April. Both newcomers will be thinner and lighter than the original unit and sources say the new Eee Pad Transformer in the Android flavor will cost $399 again, like the first 16GB model, making it a hit. Of course, because of licensing, the Win 8 version will be more expensive…

With the ability of an optional keyboard and a trackpad dock plus the tiles of Windows 8 in the same package, nothing will stop this ASUS piece of machinery from taking on the iPad 3 in full speed. However, under that touch interface, there’s still Windows and you must remember that.

Microsoft Tablet Coming in 2012?

One would have thought that after giving up the Microsoft Courier tablet/e-reader project, the Redmond giant would leave aside slates for a while and focus on Windows 8 to conquer this segment. However, Digitimes has some info that MS hasn’t given up on a hardware product, so it intends to launch a tablet next year.

Supposedly, the maker or Win 8 is working with Texas Instruments and Taiwanese manufactures, trying to launch its own branded device with Windows 8 by the end of 2012. Aside from the Xbox console, Microsoft is not exactly the best hardware producer there is, with the Zune failing to deliver and the Kin messaging phones being a total disaster.

Well, considering the funds that the company has, there’s always the time and money for an extra attempt or failure, right?

Microsoft Could Reveal Windows 8 (Tablet Version) Next Week

From the guys of Mobilissimo.ro we learn that Microsoft could reveal Windows 8, in its tablet version next week, maybe during Computex 2011. What the iPad started last year and what the Android Tegra 2 devices continued, Microsoft must finish and rule the market, just like it does with the PCs. Keep in mind that desktops are dying and tablets are the future, so that’s quite a scare for MS.

Windows 7 tablets are out right now, as they’re not intuitive and as fast as the Android ones for example. Supposedly we’re going to see an early version of Win 8 for tablets in only days for now, one meant to run on ARM architecture. The CPU is the usual Nvidia Tegra 2, found on popular devices, such as the Motorola Xoom, Asus Transformer and Acer A500.

Steve Ballmer is going to do the honors during Computex 2011, taking place from May 31st onward. Let’s see what surprises MS has for us and if they’re considering an App Store of their own or not…

Microsoft Announces Windows 8 for 2012, Separates Slates and Tablets

Speaking in Japan to a crowd of developers, Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer confirmed Windows 8 for release in 2012. This is the first official mention of a shipping date for devices with this OS on board, so it’s good news. Also, turns out that from 2012 “slate” and “tablet” won’t be equal any more.

Ballmer praised the performance of Win 7, mentioning that PCs with this OS on board will reach 350 million units this year. The Microsoft official mentioned aspects like “touch, ink and speech”, for the Windows 8 devices and we’re really curios to see what the variety of form factors brings.

We already have the Win 7-based HP Slate 500 released by HP and Microsoft and maybe we’ll use this as a landmark for the slates segment, while the average tablet will look like the iPad. MS will release the first beta of the OS in the Fall and machines will start shipping by holiday season. The manufacturing version will arrive in mid 2012.

Windows 8 and Microsoft Tablet Plans Detailed by Intel Exec

We’re already familiar with the iPad and we can predict how iOS and Honeycomb will evolve in the following months, but what about other players in the tablet segment? A bit of Microsoft’s plans leaked out, courtesy of Intel senior VP of software Renee James, who also mentioned Windows 8 and the way it will be implemented on slates.

Microsoft will apparently come out with 4 versions of Win 8 for ARM CPUs, plus Intel versions. James said that the ARM versions won’t run apps created for older version of Windows that ran on Intel’s x86 architecture. Also, the same official mentioned that the Intel flavor of Win 8 will be aimed at the smartphone and tablet market.

This makes the next iteration of Windows sound like it will have a ton of versions at this point… It makes us think of lower end variants, business ones and even some midrange Win 8 out there. How about developers and their work when creating software for this platform? They will have to choose between ARM and Intel or work with porting software…

Windows 8 to Support Facial Recognition for Login Purposes?

As you might already know, Windows 8 has recently been leaked, in the M1 build, which means nothing for the average user, but a lot to hackers. Those who have messed with the fresh code, found some interesting features in the new OS, like the ability to log in through facial recognition.

As you can see right here, the OS is able to detect human presence, meaning that it may use a Kindle-like system to detect that the rightful user is present. This would mean that Kindle gaming will also be available on the PC, not only the console and we can also imagine tablets with this system on.

Last we heard, Microsoft was developing Win 8 specifically for tablets, since Win 7 is not at all fit to compete with the likes of iOS 4.3 and Honeycomb. Imagine a tablet with Windows 8 and Kindle gaming on the go.
